The AI Era Demands a New Paradigm for PAM
The advent of the AI era has fundamentally reshaped the dynamics of identity and access management. The exponential growth of machine identities, which now significantly outnumber human identities, and the increasing integration of AI agents into enterprise workflows, present unprecedented challenges and opportunities for privileged access management.
The Shifting Landscape of Identity:
- Machine Identity Explosion: Machine identities are rapidly becoming the dominant form of digital identity within organizations. These identities, ranging from service accounts to IoT devices and AI agents, require robust management and security to prevent exploitation.
- AI Agents in the Workforce: The integration of AI agents into various business processes necessitates granting them access to enterprise systems and sensitive data. This introduces new vectors for attack if not properly governed and secured.
- Evolving Threat Actor Tactics: Cybercriminals have recognized the immense potential for disruption and exploitation offered by these new identity paradigms. Their methods are evolving, with a growing emphasis on gaining access through legitimate credentials rather than brute-force attacks.
In this evolving environment, traditional PAM solutions, which primarily focused on securing administrator credentials, are no longer sufficient. PAM must evolve to encompass the discovery, control, and governance of privilege across the entire enterprise, including cloud environments, applications, and increasingly, Kubernetes clusters.
Palo Alto Networks’ Idira platform is at the forefront of this evolution. It modernizes PAM by integrating vaulted access and Zero Standing Privileges (ZSP) with critical capabilities such as secrets management, workload security, and identity governance. This comprehensive approach ensures that ZSP principles are applied to all modern targets, providing end-to-end protection at scale.
Furthermore, Idira addresses the unique challenges of non-human access by offering native SPIFFE/SVID support. This enables the delivery of short-lived, cryptographic identities to workloads and AI agents, significantly reducing the attack surface and mitigating the risks associated with persistent, vulnerable machine identities. This innovative approach to securing non-human access is a testament to Palo Alto Networks’ commitment to staying ahead of the curve in the AI-driven cybersecurity landscape.
Modernizing PAM: Delivering Value Through Innovation and Support
Palo Alto Networks’ approach to modernizing PAM is centered on making these advanced security capabilities accessible and manageable for organizations of all sizes. While large enterprises continue to rely on Idira for its proven traditional PAM leadership, they are increasingly turning to the company for guidance on their modern PAM transformation initiatives.
Key Pillars of Modern PAM Delivery:
- Data-Driven Innovation: Palo Alto Networks leverages its Transformation Decision Engine, which utilizes customer environment data to quantify the value of PAM modernization. Combined with extensive experience in guiding PAM implementations and transformations, this data-driven approach ensures customers receive informed and impactful solutions at every stage of their journey.
- Exceptional Customer Experience: Idira provides comprehensive support to cross-functional security teams navigating complex operational shifts. This includes guidance on transitioning to ZSP, supported by resources like the Idira Blueprint, hands-on training, and an active peer community. This commitment to customer success ensures that organizations can effectively adopt and benefit from modern PAM practices.
- Unmatched Scale and Reach: Customers benefit from Palo Alto Networks’ established global reach, which has been further expanded through the integration of Idira. The company’s unified security platform offers a holistic view of identity risk across the entire attack surface. This means that a compromised or abused privileged access event can be immediately flagged and acted upon by the broader defense infrastructure, backed by the substantial investment and expertise of one of the world’s largest cybersecurity companies.
This multifaceted approach ensures that organizations are not only equipped with cutting-edge PAM technology but also empowered with the knowledge, support, and global infrastructure necessary to effectively implement and manage these critical security measures.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q1: How can Privileged Access Management (PAM) help secure AI agents in the enterprise?
PAM plays a critical role in securing AI agents by establishing granular control over their access to systems and data. This involves protecting the sensitive credentials and secrets that AI agents use to perform their tasks, as well as meticulously recording and auditing all their access and actions. Effective PAM solutions can limit each agent’s permissions to only what is necessary for its designated function and enforce time-bound access, significantly reducing the potential for misuse or compromise. Further details on Idira Agentic Identity Security can be found in the related resources.
Q2: What is the difference between Zero Standing Privileges (ZSP) and vaulted access?
Vaulted access focuses on securely storing and managing privileged credentials, ensuring they are protected from unauthorized access. In contrast, Zero Standing Privileges (ZSP) takes a more proactive approach by eliminating persistent privileged access. Instead, permissions are granted on-demand for specific tasks and are automatically revoked once the task is completed or the authorized period expires. Modern PAM solutions often combine both vaulted access and ZSP to cater to diverse operational requirements and security postures across different environments.
