LONDON — As the dust begins to settle on the initial "gold rush" of the UK’s full-fiber rollout, the telecommunications industry is entering a sophisticated new era defined by operational excellence, cross-sector diversification, and long-term asset management. At the heart of this transition is NETS International, a company that has transformed from a two-person startup in 2020 to a global infrastructure powerhouse by 2026.
In an exclusive interview at the Connected Britain 2026 conference, Jahangir Ahmad, Managing Director of NETS International, detailed the company’s meteoric rise and its strategic pivot into smart home technology, 5G integration, and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. His insights offer a roadmap for how infrastructure providers can survive and thrive as the UK’s digital economy matures.
Main Facts: A Story of Exponential Growth
Since its entry into the British market six years ago, NETS International has become a primary case study in scalable infrastructure delivery. The company’s journey is marked by several key pillars:
- Workforce Expansion: From a foundational team of just two employees in 2020, the company now employs approximately 180 specialists in the UK alone.
- Geographic Diversification: While the UK remains a core hub, NETS has successfully exported its delivery model to Germany and the United States, tapping into the global demand for high-speed connectivity.
- Vertical Integration: Moving beyond traditional fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) deployment, the company has integrated data center services, 5G network optimization, and energy infrastructure (specifically EV charging) into its portfolio.
- Strategic Pivot: As the UK’s primary fiber build-out reaches high penetration levels, NETS has shifted its focus toward maintenance, customer installations, and enhancing operational efficiency for Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
Chronology: From Market Entry to Global Player
The trajectory of NETS International reflects the broader shifts in the global telecommunications landscape over the last half-decade.
2020–2022: The Foundation and the Fiber Boom
NETS International entered the UK market at a pivotal moment. With the government’s "Project Gigabit" gaining momentum and a surge in private investment through AltNets (Alternative Networks), the demand for boots-on-the-ground engineering was at an all-time high. Starting with a skeletal crew, Ahmad focused on quality and reliability—traits that allowed the company to secure contracts with major network builders rapidly.
2023–2024: Scaling and Internationalization
By 2023, the company had established itself as a reliable partner in the UK’s civil engineering and fiber splicing sectors. Recognizing that the "build phase" would eventually peak, Ahmad initiated a two-pronged expansion strategy. First, the company moved into the German market, where the transition from copper to fiber was lagging behind the UK. Second, they established a presence in the United States, targeting the massive infrastructure subsidies provided by the BEAD (Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment) program.
2025–2026: The Move into Energy and Smart Verticals
As of 2026, NETS has successfully rebranded itself as more than just a "telecoms contractor." By leveraging its expertise in trenching, cabling, and power management, the company seamlessly entered the EV charging market. This period also saw the company embrace the "Smart Home" vertical, providing the "last-inch" connectivity and hardware installation required to turn high-speed fiber into a functional domestic ecosystem.
Supporting Data: The Metrics of Success
The growth of NETS International is supported by broader industry trends that validate Ahmad’s strategic direction.
- Labor Market Impact: NETS’s growth to 180 employees contributes to the estimated 25,000 new jobs created in the UK’s telecommunications sector since 2020. The company’s focus on internal training has helped bridge the "skills gap" that previously hindered the UK’s digital ambitions.
- The German Opportunity: Germany’s "Gigabit Strategy" aims for nationwide fiber coverage by 2030. With current penetration still catching up to its neighbors, NETS’s entry into this market allows them to apply "lessons learned" from the UK rollout to a market with a significantly higher GDP and industrial base.
- The EV Surge: The UK government’s mandate for transitioning to electric vehicles has created a demand for over 300,000 public chargers by 2030. NETS’s ability to combine fiber installation with EV charging points (often using the same civil works) represents a significant cost-saving for local councils and private developers.
- Operational Efficiency: Industry data suggests that as networks mature, the cost of customer acquisition and maintenance becomes the primary concern for ISPs. NETS has reported a significant uptick in "service-based" contracts versus "build-based" contracts, reflecting this shift.
Official Responses: Insights from Jahangir Ahmad
During the interview at Connected Britain, Jahangir Ahmad emphasized that the company’s success is rooted in its ability to listen to the market’s changing needs.
"When we started in 2020, the conversation was almost exclusively about ‘homes passed’—how fast can we get the cable in the ground?" Ahmad noted. "Today, the conversation has changed. It’s about ‘homes connected’ and ‘network resilience.’ It’s about how we can make that connection provide more value to the end-user."
Regarding the expansion into EV charging and smart homes, Ahmad explained the synergy:
"We are infrastructure experts. Whether it is a fiber optic cable carrying data or a power line carrying electricity for a vehicle, the fundamental engineering challenges are similar. By diversifying into EV charging, we are not just following a trend; we are utilizing our existing workforce and equipment to solve a different but equally critical infrastructure bottleneck."
Ahmad also touched upon the importance of the human element in a high-tech industry. "Growing from two people to nearly 200 is a challenge of culture as much as it is a challenge of logistics. Our expansion into the US and Germany depends on our ability to export our ‘service-first’ mindset. In a maturing market, the quality of the customer installation is the only thing that differentiates one provider from another."
Implications: What This Means for the Industry
The evolution of NETS International carries several significant implications for the future of the UK’s digital and energy economy.
1. The Convergence of Utilities
The distinction between telecommunications, energy, and home automation is blurring. NETS International’s model suggests that the most successful infrastructure firms of the future will be "multi-utility" providers. By installing fiber and EV chargers simultaneously, companies can reduce the "street works" disruption for residents and lower the capital expenditure for investors.
2. A Shift from Capex to Opex
For years, the UK market was defined by massive Capital Expenditure (Capex) on new builds. We are now entering the Operational Expenditure (Opex) phase. NETS’s focus on maintenance and customer service indicates that the industry’s profitability will now depend on how efficiently networks are managed over 20 to 30 years, rather than how quickly they are built.
3. The Export of British Expertise
NETS’s successful expansion into Germany and the US proves that the UK’s intense fiber competition has created a "proving ground" for world-class engineering standards. The expertise developed in the UK’s complex regulatory and geographical environment is now a valuable export commodity.
4. Job Stability in a Changing Economy
While many tech sectors are seeing volatility due to AI and automation, the "physical" side of the digital economy—cabling, splicing, and hardware installation—remains a robust source of employment. NETS’s growth demonstrates that the transition to a green and digital economy is a powerful engine for job creation, provided that companies invest in their people.
Conclusion: Looking Toward 2030
As Connected Britain 2026 draws to a close, the story of NETS International serves as a beacon for the next phase of the connectivity journey. Under the leadership of Jahangir Ahmad, the company has navigated the transition from a niche contractor to a multi-national infrastructure partner.
The road ahead will likely involve deeper integration with AI-driven network management and a broader role in the UK’s "Net Zero" transition. However, as Ahmad concluded in his interview, the core mission remains the same: "Infrastructure is the invisible backbone of modern life. Our job is to ensure that backbone is strong, adaptable, and ready for whatever technology comes next."
With a footprint now spanning three continents and a service list that covers everything from the data center to the driveway, NETS International is not just watching the future of connectivity unfold—it is actively building it.
